What Is Revision and Complication Management?

Not every surgery ends the way we hope, but that doesn't mean your journey has to stop there.

At The Center for Gender Affirmation of New Jersey, we help you reclaim comfort, function, and confidence when things haven’t gone as planned. Whether you’re experiencing surgical complications or simply unhappy with a previous result, we offer advanced solutions tailored to your unique needs without judgment or shame.

These revision surgeries are often part of multi-stage transition plans or pursued years later as life, identity, or goals evolve. Either way, you're not starting over — you're continuing your path toward achieving your ideal image.

What to Expect

During the Procedure
Revisions are highly personalized and may involve advanced microsurgery techniques such as flap salvage, nerve coaptation, or staged graft reconstruction. Some cases are completed in one procedure; others may involve multiple stages to ensure safety and long-term success. Schedule a consultation with our team to better understand what revision surgery will look like for you.

Risks and Recovery
As with all surgeries, risks include bleeding, infection, and scarring — but we use evidence-based protocols that reduce recurrence and enhance healing. Recovery time varies by procedure, and we’ll walk you through every step, from prep to post-op.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will you need to undo my previous surgery?

Not always. Many revisions build upon existing structures using nerve grafts, tissue flaps, or scar management.

How long should I wait before considering a revision?

Most revisions are evaluated at least 6–12 months after the initial surgery, once healing has stabilized.

How do I know if I need gender surgery revision?

If you’re experiencing ongoing pain, loss of sensation, aesthetic dissatisfaction, or functional complications after gender-affirming surgery, a revision consultation can help determine next steps. Common issues include scarring, asymmetry, urethral complications, or tissue breakdown.

Is revision surgery covered by insurance?

In many cases, yes. Our care team works with major insurance providers to obtain preauthorization for gender surgery revisions. We’ll also help you navigate appeals, documentation, and alternative financing if needed.

What’s the difference between gender surgery revision and a touch-up?

Revisions correct functional or structural complications, while touch-ups are typically aesthetic refinements. Both are valid and affirming — and our surgeons treat them with equal care.
