What Is Top Surgery?

Top surgery for transfeminine individuals, also called chest feminization surgery or breast augmentation, is a gender-affirming procedure that enhances breast volume and contour through implants or fat grafting. This surgery plays a vital role in aligning your outward appearance with your gender identity, helping many transgender women and non-binary individuals feel more at home in their bodies.

For those experiencing chest dysphoria or longing for a fuller bust, this surgery offers more than aesthetics; it’s about reclaiming your reflection and embracing everyday confidence.

Explore Benefits Beyond the Mirror

  • Affirms gender identity and alleviates chest dysphoria
  • Enhances self-image in clothing, photos, and intimate moments
  • Improves emotional well-being and social comfort
  • Supports a sense of bodily harmony post-transition

What to Expect

During the Procedure

Your chest is uniquely yours—and your surgical plan should be, too. Our surgeons offer several breast augmentation techniques, including:

  • Implant-based augmentation with silicone or saline implants
  • Fat grafting for subtle, natural enhancement (may be combined with implants)
  • Nipple and areola repositioning for optimal symmetry and proportion
  • Scar-sparing incisions (inframammary, periareolar, or transaxillary) based on your anatomy and goals

Surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes 1–2 hours. Most patients return home the same day.

Risks and Recovery

Most patients return to everyday activities within 1–2 weeks, though you’ll need to avoid heavy lifting or upper-body strain for about a month. A supportive surgical bra helps minimize swelling and support implant positioning during early healing.

Common side effects, such as mild soreness, swelling, and temporary numbness, usually resolve in the first few weeks. Risks, such as implant shifting or capsular contracture, are rare and are carefully monitored by your care team.

In the longer term, your surgical team will guide you through sensation monitoring, scar care, and options for future revision or enhancement if desired.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose nipple sensation?

Not necessarily. Our surgeons use advanced techniques to preserve nerves when possible.

Will scars be visible?

We aim for hidden or minimally visible scars and offer post-op treatments to support healing.

Do I need a mental health letter?

This will largely depend on your individual insurance plan. Our team will assist you in reviewing your benefits to understand what is needed for your specific coverage.

Will my results look natural?

Yes. Our surgeons use proportion-focused techniques and offer implant shapes and profiles tailored to your body goals.

Can I combine this with other procedures?

Absolutely. Many patients combine top surgery with facial, tracheal, or body procedures to minimize total recovery time.
